Fall 2008 Workshops and Meetings

These workshops are designed to help TOP scholarship recipients succeed academically and find employment after graduation. As part of the TOP requirements, scholars must attend the beginning of the semester orientation meeting, the end of the semester wrap-up meeting and at least two more of the workshops listed below during the semester.

WNY SUNY Colleges Transfer Fair September 10, 2007, 9:30 - 12:30 p.m., Batavia Campus Forum SUNY four year colleges from the Western New York area will be available to discuss the transfer process and the programs they offer.

Meeting with Representative from Cornell University September 23, 2008, Noon - 1:00pm, T 122 The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University recently entered into an articulation agreement with GCC. The transfer admissions representative will be at GCC on Tuesday, September 23rd, in room T122 to discuss transfer opportunities between our colleges. Time Management Workshop September 25, 2007, 12:30 - 2 p.m., Room S103 Trouble with managing your time?? This workshop will help you identify your time wasters, develop steps for improving how you manage your time, and get you on the path for academic success. Presenter: John McGowan.
Hackerfest - Ninth Annual Security Summit for Upstate New York September 25, 2008, Doubletree Hotel Rochester 1111 Jefferson Rd Rochester, NY 14623, 8am - 5pm Hackerfest is Upstate New York's first and only trade show on Internet and Network security. Each year, vendors gather here to discuss the latest security issues. Both technical and management staff can attend seminars on the topics that interest them. The cost of the event is free, TOP program will pay mileage.

Media Literacy Tue Sep 30 12:30 PM Batavia Campus - Room S103 Advertising effects all of us in one way or another. If you were to ask the major marketing companies for Budweiser, Miller, Coor's, etc., if they market their ads toward young people they would categorically proclaim, 'absolutely NOT'! According to Dr. Peter DeBenedittis, the overwhelming majority of today's ads are definitely targeted at our younger population. This workshop takes a closer look at some recent commercial ads, to show if this is just theory or undeniable fact.
Tips for Academic Success Wed Oct 01 1:15 PM Batavia Campus - Room S103 Presenter: Carl Wahlstrom, Professor of Sociology - Going to class regularly, reading your texts and studying, may not get you the grades you expect. The focus of this session is on the development of active learning skills. Participants will come away from this session with specific strategies to ensure successful academic skills and promote active life-long leaning.

Managing Your Money Tue Oct 21 12:30 PM Batavia Campus - Room S104 Presenter: Cheryl Corke - Ever wonder where all your money goes? How come you are broke at the end of the month? Join Cheryl Corke for an introductory workshop on personal money management. Find out how to do more with the money you have, budget it better, and maybe, just maybe - have more at the end of the month to start saving!!

Job Searching Strategies Thu Nov 20, 12:30 - 1:15 pm, S103 This workshop is intended for recent or upcoming graduates. Since graduating is near or just recent, you should start thinking of how to find the right job for you. Participating in career planning will allow you to make good decisions about your first job and thereafter. Through the process of exploring job choices and using resources and connections, you'll learn the best way to conduct a job search within your industry of interest.
